Vintage was thankfully a little calmer in 2014 than the previous year, with a hot start but quite mild conditions during ripening which allowed for excellent tannin and flavour development. The parcels looked excellent with deep colours and pure â€˜syrahâ€™ flavours with nice pepper highlights. Similar to last year, the wine is a blend of Hyde Park Vineyard (72%), the cooler, 45 yr old Westgate Vineyard (3%) and the balance from Riceâ€™s Vineyard (25%). As always, wild yeast fermented, with a variety of fermentation sizes and shapes, some with whole bunches, some destemmed. This yearâ€™s wine has firm tannin and great structure to age for many years, and I rate it as perhaps the best â€˜Grampiansâ€™ we have made in our 11 vintages. Unfined, unfiltered.
