One of the very few GSMs from the Grampians, our 'Super G' shows off the bright and juicy side of region. Not as heavy as it's SA counterparts, it's a wine we love to drink for it's easy-going nature and vibrant fruit. A slight chill in the warmer months also works well.
'Super G' was born from my love of Rhône Valley varieties and the conviction that they are destined for greatness in the Grampians. Searching for this greatness, I have been able to secure a small portion of the very rare Mourvèdre from Moyston Hills alongside Grenache from Arrawatta Vineyard (and the tiniest splash from Moyston) and this year the Syrah comes from the famed Westgate site.
The 2021 blend is 42% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 18% Mourvèdre, that have come together to make an incredibly vibrant, taught and firm, medium-bodied red. Made with no new oak, and just 10% whole bunch, aromatics are driven by Grenache and Mourvèdre, with Syrah offering fruit on the mid-palate and extra body. It's equal parts mulberry and pepper, with clean acidity to finish.
Much like the Super Tuscans added Cabernet or Merlot or Syrah to their Sangiovese in the 1980s and 1990s to breathe new life into a traditional region, I think these blends can add something exciting to the power of classic Grampians Syrah/Shiraz. Super G has been the start of that voyage of discovery for us.
"The flavours are spot on, so too the balance, so too the polish. Flavours of peanuts and red berries, twiggy/woodsy spice and Mezcal combine for quite delicious, interesting, characterful drinking. You can’t go wrong here. The flavours are right, the price is right, the wine is." - Campbell Mattinson, 92 points, The Wine Front
