The 2018 R. Lane Vintners Henty Pinot Noir was grown at the Rowan’s Lane Vineyard just west of Warrnambool, planted on black volcanic friable ashy loam over limestone and shells and sand. The vineyard is a mix of two clones, the workhorse MV6 and the slightly earlier ripening 115. The vineyard is very free draining and produces tiny berries on tiny bunches, which we usually ferment as 100% intact whole bunches in 1000lt oak fermenters over 3 weeks with indigenous yeasts. 2018 was a warm year and yields were minuscule, around 1 tonne per acre. It has the unmistakable ashen, coal tar character we see every year in this vineyard, and ample powdery tannin from the stem inclusion, but it is merely scaffolding for the ripe, pure pinot fruit. Unquestionably the best wine we have made from this site, and worthy of carrying the eponym.
"Wild-fermented with 100% whole bunches. Highly fragrant and floral, the palate of similar complexity, utterly seductive, every cadence carefully built." - James Halliday, 97 points, Wine Companion.
