Frost-defying, Westgate Vineyard's effortlessness and medium bodied ‘grace’. 2018 saw a very dry start to the season with very little winter rain. One of the worst frosts in 30 years devastated many of the low lying vineyards in the district, but fortunately our Syrah up the hills was unaffected. Still, with dry earth the harvest was always likely to be early. There were some dire predictions for a super early start but thankfully some much needed rain and cooler conditions delayed ripening just enough. Syrah was picked between the 12th and 18th of March, with good colour and moderate sugars. Once the harvest was done and dusted, I decided that our Westgate Syrah was not quite up to a single vineyard release, which means this 2018 is the beneficiary. It shows that Westgate effortlessness and medium bodied ‘grace’ that I love about the vineyard, gentle tannin and a great finish. 33% Westgate Vineyard, 66% Hyde Park Vineyard, 25% whole bunches and only 12% new oak.
