The Story Wines is oddly located in a drab, southern suburb of Melbourne, Australia. There we receive grapes from some fabulous Grampians and Henty vineyards, and turn them into wine. Each vintage there is a new story to tell, and each year our label changes to reflect that story. Small budgets, small vineyards, engaging subjects.

2009 Associates Grampians Shiraz

Cellar Door

Another Warm Year, with harvest dates almost identical to 2008. A little more rain was welcome in spring and summer, but vines were essentially struggling throughout the growing season and yields were consequently very low across all vineyards. Production this year saw slightly higher whole bunch inclusion across Garden Gully and Rice’s Vineyards. All ferments used indigenous yeasts and bacteria. We also increased the number of open, wooden ferments, supplementing our one and two-tonne polyethylene ones. All wine was raised for 12 months in French oak barriques and some hogsheads, 9% new. Rice’s vineyard was again the first picked in early March, but his time over 3 successive picks for a spectrum of ripeness. Garden Gully was very ripe with huge intensity, and Westgate Vineyard’s younger vines (12 yrs) were the best we have seen from that block. It was finished with a small percentage of wine from Henty Estate to add minerality, structure and aroma. An intense Grampians, very elemental and requiring some time to relax. The final blend comprises Rice’s Vineyard 36%, Westgate Vineyard 32%, Garden Gully 24%, and Henty Estate 8%. Bottled with very light egg white fining and no filtration

– Vine age: approx 29 years
– 13.5% alc.pH3.47
– Total Acidity 6.5g/l
